About our tap repairs work

Traditional taps drip because the washer inside has hardened or the brass seat it presses against has worn a groove. Replacing the washer alone on a worn seat will get you a few weeks before the drip returns, which is why the seat needs checking at the same time.

Mixer taps work differently. They use a ceramic cartridge, and when it wears you get dripping, stiff movement or hot and cold not blending properly. Cartridges are brand and model specific, so a photo of the tap before we come out often saves a second trip.

High water pressure quietly shortens the life of every tap and fitting in the house. If washers keep failing, or you hear a bang when a tap shuts off, the pressure itself is worth looking at rather than continuing to replace parts.

For mixers we identify the cartridge and fit the correct replacement, or advise replacement of the tap where parts are no longer available.

Why it pays to sort it early

A steady drip wastes a surprising volume of water over a year, and a tap that is leaking around the spindle is often wetting the cabinet or wall behind it without anybody noticing. Neither gets better on its own.

Questions we get asked

Why does my tap still drip after a new washer?

The brass seat underneath has almost certainly worn. It needs re-seating, otherwise the new washer is chewed out again within weeks.

Can you replace just the cartridge in a mixer tap?

Usually yes, provided the cartridge for that model is still available. Send a photo of the tap when you book and we will try to have the right one on the van.

What is the banging noise when I turn a tap off?

That is water hammer, generally caused by high mains pressure or unsecured pipework. It is worth addressing because it puts stress on every joint in the system.

Is it better to repair or replace an old tap?

If the body is sound and parts are available, repair is cheaper and quicker. Badly corroded tapware, or a fitting where parts are no longer made, is better replaced.

Can you supply the new tapware?

We can supply and install quality tapware, or fit fittings you have already bought. Either way we will tell you if what has been chosen suits your water pressure and plumbing.
