Find the water meter, usually near the front boundary, and turn the tap beside it clockwise until it stops. It is worth locating it now, while nothing is going wrong, and showing everyone in the house.
What should I do while I wait for a plumber?
Turn the water off at the meter, keep clear of any wet areas near electrical fittings, move valuables out of the way and use towels or buckets to contain the water. Do not switch on power to a flooded area.
Do you attend burst pipes after hours?

How do I know if I have a hidden leak?
Turn every tap and appliance off and watch the water meter. If it is still moving, water is going somewhere. An unexplained bill increase or a damp patch that will not dry are other common signs.
